Children of War is set on the east townships of Johannesburg where some of the most violent fighting occurred between 1991 and 1994 amongst young & different communities. Former friends, neighbours and even relatives were pitted against each other in a bitter battle of blood-letting where the biblical dictum ‘an eye for an eye’ became a way of a life. The death rate spiralled out of control as many of the killers, mere children, they did not survive the bloody killing fields. The documentary attempts to pick up the pieces of the past, looking at the impact this violence has had on the child fighters, their families and victims, more than 20 years later. Of the surviving child soldiers, most did not return to school. Many turned to substance abuse and lived lives of crime. No interventions- debriefing or reconciliation have been introduced or promoted in these areas. The communities have had to pick up the pieces of their lives and many individuals continue to be traumatised by the events of the early 1990s. There is a strong need for healing and reconciliation in these areas. The documentary looks at how people in the East Rand township of Thokoza are progressing with their lives, having lost so much and been witness to so many horrors with many former enemies as geographical neighbours who have not faced the past and attempted to reconcile with each other.
