Afterlife of Waste

The Afterlife of Waste is a feature-length documentary created and produced by Sally Ngoiri that explores the hidden environmental and social costs of the global fast-fashion industry through the lens of Kenya's second-hand clothing economy. Every year, more than 185,000 tonnes of used clothing arrive in Kenya from the Global North. While many garments find a second life in bustling markets such as Gikomba, a significant portion is damaged, unsellable, or discarded upon arrival. These textile mountains ultimately end up in dumpsites, rivers, and informal landfills, contributing to pollution, flooding, and toxic waste across vulnerable communities. At the heart of the film are two women transforming this crisis into an opportunity for change. Fashion stylist Luca sees possibility where others see waste. Through bold upcycled designs, she reimagines discarded clothing as high fashion while advocating for innovation within Kenya's second-hand clothing ecosystem. Her vision extends beyond fashion, imagining a safer, digitized future for Gikomba Market that reduces overcrowding, fire risks, and waste. Alongside her is environmental activist Janet Chemitei, who witnesses firsthand the impact of textile waste on her community. Through her work at Tengeneza Café, she empowers women and young people to upcycle discarded fabrics into new products, creating livelihoods while reducing environmental harm. As their journeys unfold, the film reveals the complex relationship between consumption, waste, and global inequality.
